Insun: Packaging Design

Insun is a cosmetics concept that develops effective sun protection products for people most at risk of skin cancer. All products are created from ingredients that care for the earth and are proven to provide optimal protection from UV radiation. So everyone can be safe in the sun.

Project Overview

The project was to conceptualise a small range of sunscreen products. This required decisions about what products to produce and the necessary packaging needed to carry the sunscreen formulas. The products needed to target the brand’s primary and secondary audiences.

The Process

The process began with a thorough investigation of competitor brand packaging. The packaging was tested in-store and examined to determine the best product quantities, containers and dispersion methods already available to consumers. The research was also done on-line by looking at other sun care brands that appeared to be targeting a similar demographic to Insun.

Packaging materials and labelling requirements were also considered. Biopolymer was found to be a suitable plastic for the packaging as it can be recycled and has a lower carbon footprint than other plastics. Where Biopolymer can’t be used, high-density polyethylene or low-density polyethylene will be used in its place. It was found to be more economical to produce packaging from prepared models. These still allowed for plastic colour customisation and surface printing. European cosmetic labelling guidelines were referred to during the packaging design, as they differ to requirements in other regions.

A variety of suitable 3d models were selected. The chosen packaging needed to carry and easily disperse several different sunscreen formulations, depending on the usage situation and area of application. The 3d models were imported into Adobe Dimension and experimentation using surface graphic design began. The individual package forms each wrapped graphics differently, so design alterations were made to each Indesign layout to allow for this.

The Result

The final range of sunscreens consist of two product lines; an SPF 30 and an SPF 50 line. Brand colours were used to separate the two formulas. Each package offers easy and efficient formula delivery to the consumer. The black plastic on each package acts as a subtle hint to the consumer of how to interact with the container. This is most effective with the twist-up container designs.
